Our Practice
For patients with severe hip or knee pain due to arthritis, non-surgical management may not be enough to control the pain and resume an active lifestyle. Performing hip and knee replacements is Dr. MacDonald‘s area of expertise and this website will introduce you to our practice, share preoperative guidebooks, and provide an easy way for you to contact us for an appointment.
Meet Dr. MacDonald
A graduate of Holy Cross College and Georgetown medical school, Dr. MacDonald completed residency at Temple Hospital in Philadelphia and was selected to do a fellowship for advanced training in hip and knee replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Outcomes in hip and knee replacement are better for patients in a center with defined clinical pathways and a sub-specialized surgeon, and this describes our program. With enhanced recovery protocols, patients are often able to go home on the day of surgery. Dr. MacDonald has performed over 8000 procedures, and Pro-Publica’s “Surgeon Scorecard” identified him as one of the highest volume knee replacement surgeons in this region with a very low complication rate. In addition, physicians in our area have named him a “Top Doc” 15 years in a row. He routinely sees patients from Virginia, Delaware, DC, and all over Maryland.
Dr MacDonald was locally the first surgeon to use image guidance with preoperative planning in the operating room to improve efficiency and alignment. In the office he architected the “Arthritis Today” program to improve patient access to care. In addition to initiating these clinical programs, he has published on their outcomes. He coordinates monthly conferences and consensus statements to spark collaboration among all the Luminis joint surgeons, and also hosts meetings in Annapolis for regional training.
Actively involved in research, Dr. MacDonald was one of the original members of our Research Institute and has contributed to over 70 peer review publications and presentations. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Arthroplasty. Dr MacDonald’s practice is completely focused on our patients. Our education, rapid recovery protocols, image guidance technology, clinical collaborations, research projects, and close attention to detail will help get you back to enjoying a life in motion. When not operating he enjoys travel, exercise, and family time in Annapolis with his wife and four children.
Physician Assistants
Physician assistants are critical to our process and throughout your journey there will be many team members providing meticulous care in the office, operating room, and hospital. Having many “sets of eyes” on each patient improves care and allows us to customize the clinical pathways to suit each patient’s unique needs.
